@twsh yes, re second point, it’s not surprising, but I’m not sure the two literatures are at all well connected (need to look into this more). Just some obvious connections/transfers:
1. is an interval scale too demanding? (see in the psych literature the work of Brown, Stewart and Chater, or in the foundations of decision theory the work on rank based approaches’
2. does EUT adequately capture outcome variability - does its application even make sense in contexts where the mean and the median diverge (see e.g., St Petersburg paradox…)
all of these are massive in their own right but they seem so much more pressing if you are somehow looking to average *across people* in a way that could command universal adherence….
the normative foundations of decision theory are already much shakier than, say, the normative foundations of classical logic or of probability theory, and that’s before you are trying to make the move to groups of people…
“happiness” isn’t even a primitive that we can affect directly- even if we buy the demand to ‘be happy’ as a universal
the more I think on this the flakier utilitarianism seems….
🧵to illustrate further the problem with scale: utilitarianism asks us to maximise the overall happiness in a population. Lets set aside the question of whether that should be the total or the mean happiness (which matters hugely) for the moment
this requires us to be able to measure individual ‘happiness’ on the *same scale* for each individual person (e.g. averaging across two lengths, one in inches one in cm doesn’t work) and that scale has to have the right properties for averaging to be a meaningful operation.
your introductory stats course will tell you about different levels of measurement: nominal (you put data points into discrete categories), rank order (say you have bins like not happy, somewhat happy, super happy - here you know that ‘super happy’ is happier than ‘somewhat happy’, but you don’t know by *how much*), interval scale (you could measure happiness levels like you measure temperature, so you know that the difference between 10 degrees of happiness and 20 is the same as that between 50 and 60), and, finally, a ratio scale (unlike temperature your happiness scale also has a true zero).
These differences between types of measurement/scale matter because they determine the kinds of mathematical operations that are possible. Calculating the mean requires at least an interval scale. >>
@sundogplanets because they want some of that sweet sweet venture money that gets thrown around when your press release contains the words space and ai.
@projectgus @stibbons as someone that spent far too much effort applying for those grants (and failed) yes - Ampol got a govt subsidised bargain and will probably ratchet up pricing in the 70c-80c/kwh range so they're actually profitable, anything less than that for a DC charger is probably making less money than cash in a term deposit
@decryption @stibbons Yeah, interesting! Our local Evies are similar, all smaller chargers (50kW and under) installed under some different grants (Victoria's "Charging the Regions"). Still dispensing at about 55c/kWh - which is indeed too cheap to be profitable from what I understand
U.S. President Donald Trump says he discussed the case of imprisoned Hong Kong businessman Jimmy Lai with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a recent summit, but has not offered details on whether it yielded any results. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/10/01/world/politics/trump-hong-kong-jimmy-lai-xi/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #politics #us #donaldtrump #hongkong #jimmylai #china #xijinping #appledaily

it would be cool if tailscale let me give them some money for a "Lite" plan that lets me attach a custom domain name to my tailnet (unless you can do that already and I'm too stupid to figure out how)
@decryption this is one reason I jumped to self hosted NetBird.

@stibbons Yeah, I wonder. I think a lot of the Evies around here were installed under various govt grants where they are required to dispense subsidised electricity for so many years. So currently a bunch of them are cheaper than the market rate.
I wonder if that's all about to expire...

@allpurposemat
@maybe kindly ask @algernon for advice 🤔
@chfkch @allpurposemat I'd suggest enabling generated URLs. That should be the default with the built-in handler, with NSoE, you need to do it explicitly:
declare-handler nsoe {
checks {
generated-urls {
identifiers abrakadabra
}
}
}
Replace abrakadabra with a string that doesn't exist outside of the maze (you can have more than one listed there, and iocaine will choose one randomly).
That won't immediately fix the problem, but as soon as the crawlers start hitting the generated URLs, they'll be trapped.
Then, you can enable the firewall to reduce the amount of garbage iocaine serves.
These things get through, btw, because they're either real remote chromes, or (less likely) emulate them at sufficient level to be hard to distinguish.
Meanwhile, what you can try, is also enabling the Cookie Monster (if using Nam-Shub of Enki):
declare-handler nsoe {
checks {
cookie-monster {
forgejo-hosts forge.example
}
}
}
That'll put up a small cookie wall that I found a lot of these chromes won't pass.
Hope that helps! If not, let me know, and I'll try to figure something else out.

Ukrainian company Fire Point reveals the long range FP-9 missile will be ready for military use by December 1.
The FP-9 has a range of 850 kilometers, enabling it to carry its 800 kilogram warhead to Moscow. The size is comparable to hitting a target with 16 FP-1 drones at once.
The missile is expected to increase destruction in Russia's capital significantly, as it hits the target at a speed of 7,900 km/h, making it very hard to shoot down.
Winter is coming.
@randahl
So it is a hypersonic missile, in the terminal phase, that #Ukraine is going to field. That should allow Ukraine to hit Russian ports in Black Sea easily. Though this will not be able to hit the Caspian Sea region without a reduction of warhead size. On the other hand if Ukraine manages to get hold of #Crimea then the situation changes.
Such a useless war this is. 4+ years and counting.
@decryption
A CNAME redirect wouldn't work?
@jannem oh interesting - mycooldomain.au as a cname to tail5361.ts.net (the domain tailscale assigned me) - I'll try it out later

J'ai fait une 'tite boulette lors de la dernière maj de mon instance #Pixelfed.
Y'a des actions en attente qui doivent être rattrapées. Ça va prendre un certain temps ça va faire ramer le serveur.
Désolé !
